Decorating ideas seem to be everywhere. The
trick is selecting the decoration style you are
comfortable with. There are TV shows galore,
magazines by the ton and interior decorator
companies on every corner -- it seems. So with
all that data overload, how do you know what
you personally want? Maybe you should go to a
mountaintop and meditate, but if that is not real
for you, let us bring the mountain to you.
Most of the interior decorating companies’
stores have plenty of samples for you to take
home. For years all the samples have been very
small and so hard to see what the color would
look like in your room. Now most of the
companies have much larger sample patches
or swatches so is easier to plan effectively.
Take some, which you think you may like, home
and get to know them well. It is a good idea to
have some basic furniture choices already
made. This is important so as to have the colors
work with each other. When you have your first
and second choices made, take those samples
to the furniture store for the final decision. After
all, ox-blood red leather will not fit at all well with
burgundy walls.
The kitchen is another area where choosing a
pattern or a material to base your design on, is
a really good plan. Are you inclined to use
stainless steel or do you wish to design around
marble tops? Perhaps black appliances are
your starting point with white ceramic tiles.
Choose something that will last ten years or
more to base the decor on.
I would suggest the furniture as a starting point
for the bedrooms. At least the era of the décor
will be directed by your furniture selections.
Stark, modern furniture dose not go with frilly
curtains. Take some swatches home or to the
paint store, to help you decide on your color
pallet.
