Safety First
All of us are anxious to get on with those
renovation tasks and get them over with,
however, it is vital that you consider the risks
associated with each task. Some of these
dangers are obvious and others are much
more hidden.

There is an old saying, wisdom comes from
experience and experience comes from
mistakes. You do not need to make those
mistakes yourself. You can let it be other
people making those mistakes, in the past, be
where you get your wisdom. Many others as
well as myself are more than willing to share
our experience with anyone that wishes it.
Most of us, mercifully, still have ten fingers and
two good eyes. If you pay attention, you can
perform the handyman work safely.

Whenever using power tools:·
* always wear goggles and safety gloves·
*  do not wear loose clothing·
* make sure that you are not standing in
moisture·
* pay attention to what you are doing·
* only use the tool for what it was designed for

If using a torch any other flame powered
tool·
*
be sure you are in well ventilated area·
* have a helper that is watching for problems
(fire)·
* keep a fire extinguisher and / or water at
hand·
* do not use a torch near a gas line or other
highly inflammable

When utilizing chisels and sharp knives·
*
use the right chisel or knife for each job·
* be sure the tool is sharp·
* wear leather safety clothes ie: gloves or
apron·
* cut away from yourself not towards any part
of your body
The motto to remember is: always cut
towards your chum and not your thumb, you
can always find another chum.
Jacks and other power lifts·
* use a jack rated for at least twice the load you plan to lift·
* be sure to have the load stabilized so it can not fall over as lifted·
* stop and block your advances often·
* stop and check that there are no unexpected effects from your jacking
